Overview:Senior Hull Structural Engineer specializing in strength and structural engineering of vessels and floating system hulls.This is a shore-based engineering and consulting position in Chevron Shipping Company’s Marine Services Group. Located in Houston, TX, the position is open to both Chevron employees and outside applicants. The position provides marine structural engineering and naval architecture services for Chevron’s upstream offshore projects which incorporate floating systems in various development phases including early concept development phase, front end engineering phase, to design and construction phase. Floating systems include ship-shaped offshore facilities such as floating production, storage, and offloading vessels (FPSO’s), conversion of vessels to FPSOs, Drill Ships, and shuttling, marine support, and transportation systems associated with or supporting offshore oil and gas production facilities. The position requires occasional domestic and international travel, visits to ships and offshore production facilities, work with international development project teams and eligibility to remain and work indefinitely in the United States. The ability to accept temporary international assignments is highly desirable.Qualifications:Key Job Responsibilities for this position may include but are not limited to:• Provide structural and naval architecture technical support to project teams through the phases of development of floating systems including early concept development, front end engineering phase, to design and construction phase. • Coordinate Chevron Shipping hull technical support of upstream projects having multiple discipline engineers and subject matter experts assigned or utilized. • Provide design engineering services for FPSO hull new build construction, Drillship hull construction, and design and construction of hulls for marine vehicles and transportation systems for offshore developments. • Provide hull design engineering services for major conversions of marine facilities to floating oil and gas production systems such vessel conversions to FPSOs. • Provide detailed structural technical support for marine hull conversions including vessel inspection and condition assessment, evaluation of structural gaugings, evaluation of remaining fatigue life, assessment of structural corrosion margins and other similar analysis for life extension and determination of the extent of structural reinforcement or renewals. • Provide detailed naval architecture technical support for FPSOs including hull longitudinal strength, hull fatigue, stability, damage stability, regulatory requirements, classification and industry standards, hull and tank arrangements and accommodation arrangements and requirements. Further provide support in hydrodynamics as related to interaction with environment, station keeping and heading control of FPSOs. • Provide hull design engineering services for new build construction or conversion for specialty floating production units such as Floating LNG processing systems (FLNG) and Floating Gas to Liquids processing systems (FGTL) and specialty marine systems such as Dynamic Positioning and offshore transfer and off loading systems.• Prepare technical reports, analysis, estimates and other documentation required to support upstream development projects. Review and coordinate hull engineering work and report preparation by other Marine Services Group project engineers and subject matter experts assigned to the project.• Perform limited internal structural analysis using ABS Safehull (or other equivalent classification society software), spread sheets and post processing systems for buckling and fatigue assessment. Report results and recommendations of the analysis as this work affects the design and construction of floating facilities. Have knowledge of and ability to review and analyze detailed finite element (FEA) structural strength and fatigue analysis (SFA) performed by contractors and classification societies. • Provide analysis review of hull structural performance for transportation systems, floating production facilities, FPSOs and new hull design concepts including economic evaluations and preparation of cost estimates.• Background in naval architecture education/experience, providing strong technical expertise in the area of naval architecture with empahsis on hull design and analysis. • Background expertise in Shipyard and Floating Systems hull contracting strategy development, bidding package development and knowledge of marine construction and conversion market conditions.• Investigate hull problems with FPSO systems and other type of vessels. Work with FPSO management team, manufacturers, regulatory community, and other industry experts to provide long term solutions and improvements.• Provide technical coaching, and support to other Marine and Hull and Systems Engineers to improve the organizational capacity and capabilities of the Chevron Shipping Marine Services Group. • Conduct feasibility studies in areas such as vessel hull performance, tanker transportation, tug and barge systems, floating systems facilities, FPSOs and new design concepts including economic evaluations and preparation of cost estimates.Required (Basic) Qualifications:• Bachelors Degree is required in Naval Architecture and/or Structural Engineering.• In ADDITION to academic preparation, the position requires ideally about 10 years experience in the above disciplines.• Strong capabilities and working experience in Naval Architecture with emphasis on marine hull specification, design and hull engineering analysis in tankers and ship-shaped Floating Systems Facilities such as FPSO.• Experience in major offshore projects including development phases from concept development, FEED engineering, Detailed engineering, construction, installation, and commissioning. • Working Experience with FPSO/FSO, Floating Gas units (for instance FLNG) including hull specification development.
